This artwork is dedicated to the memory of my father Donald Sherratt (1933-2025 )
He spent endless hours in retirement metal detecting. In this Mixed Media piece I have included in the foreground some original fragments of a WW2 Handley Page Hampden Bomber that he unearthed while detecting at the crash site in Huntley, Glos. Having lost a son myself, it saddened and shocked me to read of the 4 young men serving in the RAF that had lost their lives in this crash back in 1940 and also that there did not seem to be a lasting memorial to honour them near the site of the crash. My hope is that this artwork might be displayed somewhere as a lasting memorial.
I am pleased to have created this during the 80th anniversary year celebrating VE Day.
Sergeant Joseph Edmund Shields ( Age 27 )
Sergeant Richard Thomas Bowtell ( Age 22 )
Sergeant Ralph Alexander Keeling ( Age 29 )
Pilot Officer Albert Frederick Jeffries ( Age 22 )
This was recently exhibited for the first time at Gloucestershire Society of Artists exhibition at Nature in Art, Twigworth, Gloucestershire. I was pleased to hear that it came 2nd in the "Peoples Choice " vote.
